I think (this is an ‘off the top of my head’ list) people need:

Freedom - Autonomy of thought and action

Work — Production of a product, even when it has small economic value

Security — The sense that we and ours are able to survive

Purpose- What fills our souls and contributes to our community or society

Challenge — Since people grow with the proper adversity

Equity — An elusive concept that we have self and social respect despite possible shortcomings.

Any power structure can and does suppress these in the population if they become predatory or vampiristic to the benefit of a few.

No system will be perfect. My hope is that Millenials and computer algorithms might turn the tide of the current situation.
