Why do we write?
What compels us to put our words out in front of anyone who might want to read our ideas?
There are a lot of possible answers for each of us. Many of us write and publish on Medium for the money to start with and find that we actually have things to say. We find that we can connect with others who need our words, our stories, and ideas.
There is a ‘high’ when people react and comment on our writing. We remember that we are human and not going through this all alone.
Not that this is easy. Physical labor works the muscles (I have done my share of that), but the mental/emotional labor of writing a coherent article or poem is difficult in a whole other way. Physical labor never left me in tears or emotionally exhausted the way that writing for an audience does.
I find it easy to find and criticize my ‘mistakes’ when I have published some of my work. Sometimes it feels too shallow and sometimes I try to put way more information in a post and find that I have created an unreadable conglomeration of ideas. A Gordian Knot that will not untie.
But I have found my love of writing, my joy of expression to be exhilarating. The juggling of concepts and emotions is exciting!
And so, I write. I gift bits of my soul to you to do with as you please. For this is a marvelous adventure that readers and writers share.
