You Must Be A Fool

For #NAPOWRIMO and all the creative fools

Self-portrait — Dana Sanford

to write poetry
and show it to others

To create in the open

To sing and whistle
and dance and fly

to believe in something
beyond religion and science

to believe that creation
can balance destruction
and everything is growing

to believe that you may be special

to go unarmed into enemy territory
and not believe in enemies

to believe that words
are more than the sum of letters

You Must be a fool

to converse with animals
and trees
and rocks

to have faith
that the universe is sentient

you must Be A Fool

to think that there is more to life than rules
to think that you are an agent of creation
to think that the universe is on your side
to see right now as beautiful

You Must Be A Fool

to know that strangers are kind
to love the wind

to be better informed by a sunrise
than the NEWS

to know that you are unique
but never separate

You must be a fool

to not think
the bad guys are out to get you
and there are no wolves at the door

to smile at each new day

You must be a fool
Must be a fool
Be a fool
A fool
